A Way of Being
As the vision for WonderPlay was developing, there was a moment that quietly shaped everything we do.
I was honored to be invited to attend the birth of a friend’s baby. Labor had become difficult. The room was filled with tension. My friend was exhausted and in pain, and concern could be felt in every corner of the room.
Then a midwife entered.
She did not rush. She did not speak loudly. She did not become the center of attention. Instead, she brought with her something that is difficult to describe, yet impossible to forget.
Her presence changed the atmosphere.
With quiet confidence and gentle attentiveness, she came alongside the mother. As I watched, something remarkable began to unfold. The mother’s breathing gradually slowed. Her body softened. Her pain lessened. Even the curve of their spines seemed to mirror one another as the mother leaned forward on a birthing ball and the midwife leaned gently over her in support. On the monitor nearby, the baby’s previously distressed heartbeat settled into a steady rhythm.
That image has remained with me ever since.
What stayed with me was not simply the skill of the midwife, but the way she was with another human being. Her calm, regulated presence brought steadiness to a mother in distress and, in that moment, seemed to create space for both mother and baby to find calm together.
It reminded me that sometimes our greatest influence is not found in what we say or what we do, but in the way we show up.
That moment helped shape what would one day become The WonderPlay Way.
At WonderPlay, we believe that children flourish in the presence of adults who are calm, curious, compassionate, reflective, and emotionally available. Before we guide children, we seek to understand them. Before we direct, we connect. Before we teach, we build relationships.
We call this our Way of Being.
A way of being is the manner in which we consistently think, relate, and respond to the world around us. It reflects our values, attitudes, and character, shaping not only what we do, but how we do it. Our way of being influences every interaction with children, caregivers, one another, and our community.
The WonderPlay Way is not simply a collection of activities or practices. It is a commitment to cultivating a presence that helps children and families feel safe, seen, valued, and encouraged. We believe that the atmosphere surrounding a child matters, and that atmosphere is created, moment by moment, by the way we show up.
Everything we do at WonderPlay grows from this foundation.
The WonderPlay Way in Action
The WonderPlay Way is more than the philosophy behind WonderPlay—it is the foundation upon which everything we do is built. It shapes how we welcome families, prepare our environments, engage in play, support caregivers, develop our team, and make decisions. It influences not only what we do, but how we do it.
WonderPlay is where The WonderPlay Way comes to life.
WonderPlay is an early developmental enrichment center for young children and their caregivers. Through thoughtfully designed play experiences, meaningful relationships, and intentional environments, we help nurture children’s development while strengthening the relationships that matter most.
We believe children learn best through play, relationships, exploration, and everyday experiences. We believe caregivers are a child’s first and most important teachers, and that they should be encouraged, equipped, and actively involved in their child’s developmental journey. Rather than separating children from the adults who know them best, we invite caregivers to participate alongside them, creating opportunities to learn, connect, and grow together.
Every aspect of WonderPlay has been intentionally designed to reflect The WonderPlay Way—from the layout of our spaces and the materials we choose, to the way we greet families, celebrate progress, and support one another as a team.
While WonderPlay is one expression of this philosophy, our vision reaches far beyond our own walls.
We believe The WonderPlay Way can inspire any individual or organization that serves young children and families. Whether in early childhood programs, schools, healthcare settings, community organizations, churches, or family support services, its principles can be thoughtfully adapted to strengthen relationships, enrich development, and create environments where children and families flourish.
Because The WonderPlay Way is not simply about creating better programs.
It is about becoming people whose presence helps others thrive.
